The snow park can be an intimidating place, where those wanting to learn and laugh don't feel welcome. But it's as much about confidence as it is skill.. Sherides are an amazing initiative set up to help girls pop their park cherry, and then develop them into more comfortable and skilled, park boarders and skiiers.
Sheride-Sessions was born in the winter of 2010 , when Tracey Torres Bowes and Cab9 snowboard school organised the 1st “Sheride Freesessions (now sessons)” in Meribel. A day to get female snowboarders and skiers hitting the park, encouraging, building confidence and just generally having fun! In 2013 Claire Almond-Jones joined the Sheride team.
Sheride-Sessions grew from a passion for the mountains, snowboarding, having fun and getting like minded girls of valley hitting the park with confidence !
And it was obviously something girls wanted and needed, as it quickly grew. The main event pulls huge numbers of girls from across the three valleys, with a wide variety of experiences and skill sets. Cab9 and Ski New Gen provided the tutoring for the day, with constant encouragement and tips on how each girl could improve between boxes/ jumps. I was impressed by the atmosphere they created with the groups, whatever their ability.
The irony of a the name 'Park' is that it should be a place to play, relax and just muck about; but can often leave the riders quaking in their boots for fear of not being good enough. Filling the park with laughing girls, all shouting supportive words and laughing together, was enough to make me want to try. This is what it's all about.. confidence and fun.
Get along to the next Sherides girls, and get in that park (with helmets on of course). And though I fear this may sound condescending, good work to all the chicks who came out and had go, even when they were scared sh*tless of landing a jump backwards, or sliding a box.. you were all awesome.
A friend of mine posted this quote on facebook, when speaking about her own ski experiences, and it feels apt to share here.
'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!'
