There aren't many situations in life where it is acceptable.. no, compulsory, to drink hard, party harder and listen to great live music... at 4pm.. every afternoon. There are a great many less where this music is so awesome, the scenery is second to none, and the altitude only aids the giddy effects of alcohol after a day of exercise on the mountain. For those of you already smiling, you'll know I'm referring to the magic time we call, après.
Meribel is a pretty special place when it comes to music, and I've been asked to shoot some wicked parties at one of my favourite apres spots in the area.. The Rond Point..
or lovingly known to anyone who's been here.. The Ronnie.
I can just about hear the distant cheers, and nostalgic 'aaahs' from past seasonaires and skiiers/boarders who've been here- I can definitely picture all your smiles. And trust me, I can still hear the screeches and whoops off the dance floor at Bubble & Crisp last week, ringing in my ears. Whilst shooting that particular gig I was aware I was almost always smiling; I'd turn around to find toffee vodka being poured down yet another's face; girls on guys' shoulders throwing more shapes than you can image; and looking out across the terrace to what looked like rolling hills of smiling faces in ski and board gear.
You have never seen so many people, in so many layers and with so much head gear on, dance through so much sweat and with so much vigour.
The Apres party-er is a special breed.. because once they've been home for a feed, they all go out and do it again that night.
Not all the gigs are the pumping dj sets of Bubble & Crisp. I also went along to see Daisy B and friends on Saturday. The vibe was different, but no less fun and smiley. The giggles and jokes between Daisy, Tom and Al Jones were entirely infectious, and the banter between the band and the punters was brilliant.
The clatter of ski boots across the wooden floor was like a bass drum, as people threw themselves into dance,
including a tiny little dude throwing some serious break dance moves.
I'm going to be at a lot of these apres gigs, with my trusty camera in hand, to capture some of your 'Ronnie memories'.. just in case the toffee vodka eliminates the majority of them. If you see me amidst the party madness, with my huge camera in hand, tap me on the shoulder and give me your most fun smiley, dancey pose. Then get back to the Ronnie's FB page to see if you've made it onto the photo-diary. The Wardette Studio will be getting as many pics up on there as possible, so get sharing, tagging and re-living those wicked gigs.
See you at the next one guys!
