This week we hang out with Harry & Grace, for their pre-wedding shoot at home. Everything just came together for this one; the space, the style, the feeling... and check out the dog Vince, he is the cutest little dude.
NB- Rather excitingly, you'll be seeing their wedding photos here next week! Keep your eyes out!
As it happens, I rarely do couple shoots at home. The focus of these pre-wedding sessions is practice; a chance to get used to the camera, and feel easier about being affectionate and natural together for photos. For this reason, I always use locations where I can easily work without distraction or complication. In most homes, there is less space and freedom to move around, and often a lot less natural light than I prefer.
Most homes though, don't look like this one. Their place was minimal and modern, with large shafts of natural light spilling onto the uninterrupted white walls; light just bounced off and up from everything. Their choice of decor was super tasteful too, which always helps;
a neutral palette, with gorgeous natural textures like wood, faux fur, slate, and marble...
I had an overwhelming case of house-envy.
Harry and Grace greeted me at the door in equally chic outfits, super casual in jeans and t-shirts, but in perfectly matching greys and whites. Then their gorgeous pup, Vince came bounding over too; a miniature labradoodle with the loveliest curly coat. It was an editorial dream.
It goes without saying, that we are most relaxed at home, right? We are our most comfortable, and off-guard; pottering about the house in slipper socks or sipping a cup of tea in the garden. You'd think this would make for natural photos too, wouldn't you?
Surprisingly, the addition of me and my huge camera in these intimate situations, can throw the chemistry a little! Suddenly, I become the elephant in the room. It's even stranger to be cosy and couply at home, when the photographer is clicking away just beside you.
Once we broke through that though, Harry & Grace relaxed. Once they did ease into the whole process, the shoot became even more personal and natural.
Quick Nearly-Wed Q & A:
Do you remember the first time you saw each other?
G: The first time I met Harry was at his 21st birthday party, both of us were with different people at the time, and 4 years later we bumped into each other again in Hitching under different circumstances. Harry will always say I asked him out haha.
When did you first know you wanted to marry them?
G: Harry says he's not sure exactly when he knew wanted to marry me, but after we had been living together he knew it was going to be serious. He says me being so amazing with his family and friends, and being the most kind and loving person he's met was what sealed it.
How did they propose? And how did you react?
G: Harry proposed to me in Bournemouth at the venue where we are getting married. It's become a really special place for us. He proposed by the water as the sun went down before taking me to dinner.. I cried and said yes, but without even acknowledging the ring which he had to point out to me!
What do you think makes you work so well as a couple?
G: What makes us work is having the same interests but at the same time being opposites in our behaviours, we balance each other out. It makes us good tag team partners. Harry is always thinking of ways to surprise me, and I am always there to support him no matter what.
There isn't a single moment in these pictures, where these guys don't look totally in love, and I can't ask for anything more.
This is what we want to capture on the wedding day, these moments and this chemistry.
Thanks to Harry & Grace for making me lots of cups of tea and to Vince for all the hugs. I cannot wait to come and shoot your wedding this week. This week! Can you believe it? Keep your eyes peeled for my super speedy sneak peek next week.. If they look this good chilling at home, imagine how insane they'll look at the wedding.
